Creative / Maker Space

Why Attend Summer Enrichment at Sky After School?

Our approach to summer includes the use of our Montessori classrooms and our Creative Space/Maker Space which is a collaborative work environment where students gather to learn, create, invent, and share ideas. Our creative space is equipped with items such as basic craft supplies to to more complex technology like robotics kits and coding resources, 3D printers, and laser cutters. The combination of our Creative Maker Space with the Montessori Classroom emphasizes learning through hands-on experiences and fosters a culture of innovation and creativity.

This environment supports the Montessori method’s emphasis on self-directed activity, hands-on learning, and collaborative play. Spending the morning time engaging with the learning materials in the classroom, then moving to Creative Space to apply that learning will provide your child with an avenue of fun while retaining the academic progress of the school year.

Tailored to Diverse Learning Styles:

The tactile, kinesthetic nature of our daily activities makes our program particularly well-suited to children with diverse learning styles. Children who might struggle with traditional academic subjects can thrive when they engage in physical creation and problem-solving.

Integrates with Montessori Curriculum:

Creative Space activities can then be easily integrated with the broader academic Montessori curriculum, enhancing subjects such as geography, history, and science, by providing a practical, experiential component that deepens understanding.

Montessori Principles of Self-Directed Learning:

Summer Enrichment in a Montessori setting encourages children to choose their projects and set their own pace, fostering independence and self-motivation. This aligns with the emphasis on empowering children to take charge of their learning experiences.

Yet, our program is inherently collaborative, providing numerous opportunities for social interaction and collaboration. Children learn to negotiate, collaborate, and share ideas within a group, work together on projects, learn from each other's successes and failures, and build a community of learners. These experiences teach valuable teamwork and communication skills which are crucial social skills in both academic and personal settings.

As an added bonus, children and adults alike can learn to use various tools and technologies that are essential in the modern world. From simple hand tools to sophisticated digital fabrication technologies, participants gain practical skills that are applicable in many educational and professional contexts.

The skills learned at maker space camps are highly relevant to current and future job markets. Exposure to STEM fields through practical, hands-on experience can spark interest in careers in engineering, science, technology, and more. Above all, maker space camps are fun! They offer children a chance to play and learn simultaneously, keeping their engagement high and ensuring they enjoy their learning experiences.

Attending a maker space camp within a Montessori school provides a unique blend of creative freedom, practical skill-building, and intellectual exploration for children aged 7-12. It aligns with the Montessori philosophy of holistic education and prepares children for both academic success and personal growth.
